About Libya

Libya extends over 1,759,540 square kilometers (679,362 sq mi), making it the 16th largest nation in the world. Libya is washed by the Mediterranean sea in the north. It is neighboring Tunisia and Algeria in the west, Niger in the southwest, Chad in the south, Sudan in the southeast, and Egypt in the east. Libya’s coastline of 1,770 kilometers (1,100 mi) is the longest among other African countries bordering the Mediterranean.

The vast majority of the Libyan population resides in the regions known as the Jefara and Jebal.

Libya is at the heart of a region that is steeped in history – one which dates back to around 10,000 BC.

The law of Libya has historically been influenced by Ottoman, French, Italian, and Egyptian sources.

Libya has approximately 6.037 million inhabitants. Expatriates, working under government contracts, are largely citizens of other Muslim countries.

Libya has embarked on a number of economic plans with the aim of diversification of the oil-based economy into other sectors.

Libya has a good infrastructure thanks to its development projects since the 1970s. A number of major international airlines fly to Libya regularly.
